Chores and cleaning aren’t anyone’s favorite things to do. I hate to clean and so does the rest of my family. But I am organized so it is good to know that a cluttered disorganized home looks dirty but an organized home always looks clean. But cleaning and chores still need to be done. Some daily, weekly, monthly or seasonally depending on what it is.

Winter is here. It took a while in the Denver-Boulder metro area but it is here now. These cold days should be a reminder that there are some chores we only do in the winter. I know spring is the season most people associate with cleaning but there are chores that we should be doing in each season. Don’t forget to get the whole family involved. Even young children can help with some chores.

Keep in mind that if your children have not been doing chores regularly then you may need to have them start with chores for younger children and if your children have been doing chores for a long time then they may be able to handle chores for older kids. Having children doing chores is important. It teaches them responsibility, gives them a sense of belonging, accomplishment and self-esteem, and helps them develop important executive function skills. By doing chores children learn to follow steps (planning and prioritizing), focus their attention even when a tasks is boring (sustain attention) and learn how long tasks take them to complete (time management).

Happy Cleaning!
